Q: Why do the batteries in my camera drain so quickly? What can I do to take more pictures using fewer batteries?

A: Digital cameras drain alkaline batteries quickly, but there are several options that may help you.

  • Turn off the LCD display and use only the view finder for taking pictures.
  • Use alkaline batteries for high-drain devices, these may last a little longer.
  • Use Nickel-Cadmium (NiCD) rechargeable batteries. Use of these batteries also requires the use of a battery charger. It is recommended that you have two sets of batteries; one set in the camera and one charging or in reserve for when you need to swap them out. The advantage of this solution is the long-term savings of not having to buy alkaline batteries.
  • Use Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) rechargeable batteries. This solution also requires the use of a battery charger. NiMH batteries seem to last longer than NiCD batteries. Another good thing about the NiMH batteries is that they do not have as much of a "memory effect" as the NiCD batteries. With NiCD batteries, you are supposed to fully drain them before each recharging. Otherwise, they are unable to hold as much of a charge the next time, due to crystal growth inside the battery. NiMH batteries do not have this problem, or at least not as much.
