Q: Why did my CD fragment or shatter?

A:

Compact discs (CD) are made of layers of metal and protective plastic laminated together. Over time a disc ages, the layers may become separated and, if flexed, may shatter.

Due to the high speeds of CD-ROM drives manufactured today, there is significant vibration. Older CDs made of lower-quality materials or CDs that have developed cracks, may shatter or fragment at these speeds.

Newer CDs are made of high-quality polycarbonate substrates that do not exhibit such characteristics. High-quality CDs remain elastic and return to their initial shape when flexed.
