Q: How do I remove and replace the optical drive in the 3-bay micro-BTX case?

A: Note: There are two methods for removing and replacing the optical drive. This document covers both methods.

  • Drive cage remains in the computer - This method can be faster, but there is less room to work.
  • Remove drive cage from computer - This method provides working room, but the front bezel must also be removed.

  • Drive cage remains in the computer

      Remove the optical drive

    1. Turn off the computer, and then disconnect the power cord and all external device cables.

    2. Remove the access panel.

    3. The optical drive cage is located at the front left corner of the case.

    4. At the rear of the drive, disconnect the power and data cables.

    5. On the top of the drive cage, slide the drive release latch toward the middle of the computer into the unlocked position.

    6. Push the rear of the drive toward the front of the computer, and then pull the drive out of the front of the computer.

      Replace the optical drive

    1. Slide the drive into the front of the computer until the front of the drive is flush with the front of the case.

    2. Slide the drive release latch toward the left side of the computer into the locked position.

    3. Connect the power and data cables to the rear of the drive.

    4. Replace the access panel.

    5. Connect the external device cables and power cord, and then turn on the computer.

  • Remove drive cage from computer

      Remove the optical drive

    1. Turn off the computer, and then disconnect the power cord and all external device cables.

    2. Remove the access panel.

    3. Remove the front bezel.

      Note: Never attempt to remove the drive cage without first removing the front bezel. Doing so can cause damage to the bezel, the cage, and possibly the drive.

    4. Lift the drive cage up a short distance, and then disconnect the power and data cables from the rear of the drive.

    5. Place the drive cage on a flat surface.

    6. Slide the drive release latch toward the outside of the drive cage into the unlocked position.

    7. Push the drive toward the front of the drive cage.

    8. Pull the drive out of the front of the cage.

      Replace the optical drive

    1. Slide the drive into the front of the drive cage, connector end first. When properly aligned, the rear of the drive is flush with the rear of the drive cage.

    2. Slide the drive release latch toward the middle of the drive cage into the locked position.

    3. Holding the drive cage close to the computer, connect the power and data cables to the rear of the optical drive.

    4. Place the drive cage into the case. Round knob-like extrusions on the front corners of the drive cage fit into U-shaped slots in the case.

    5. Replace the front bezel.

    6. Replace the access panel.

    7. Connect the external device cables and power cord, and then turn on the computer.
