Q: How do I remove and replace the internal speaker in the Gateway 3-bay nBTX case?

A: Note: An internal speaker is not included in all configurations. If the speaker is present, it is located between the air duct and the side of the case.

Refer to following graphic and table for locations of internal components. Read through these removal and replacement steps before starting the procedure.

Remove the internal speaker

  1. Turn off the computer, and then disconnect the power cord.

  2. Remove the case access panel.

  3. Inside case, press the speaker release latch down, and then slide the speaker toward the front of the case about one-half inch.

  4. Loosen the speaker in the case so that you can remove it and disconnect its cable later.

  5. Tilt the hard drive carrier up, and then release the hard drive signal cable from the clip on the bottom of the carrier.

  6. Lift the hard drive carrier hooks free of the rear case tabs, and then gently lay the assembly upside down on the air duct. There is no need to disconnect the cables.

  7. Inside the case, disconnect the 24-pin main power lead from the motherboard. It is located near the power supply in the area the hard drive was covering. Press the tab and then lift to disconnect it.

  8. At the rear of the computer case, remove the four screws that secure the power supply.

  9. Slide the power supply toward the front of the case, and then lift it up just enough to lay it on the external drive bay.

  10. Follow the speaker cable to its connection on the motherboard. Carefully note this connection location, and then disconnect the cable.

  11. Remove the speaker from the computer case.
Replace the internal speaker

  1. Inside the computer case, align the flat side (with "legs") of the speaker with the side of the case and about one-half inch closer to the front of the case than its installed position. Slots in the bottom of the case accept the "legs" on the speaker.

  2. Slide the speaker toward the rear of the case until its release latch engages.

  3. Route the speaker cable through the case to its connection on the motherboard, and then plug in the cable. The connector is keyed to ensure proper connection.

  4. Align the power supply in the rear corner of the case, and then slide it to the rear of the case. Check surrounding cables to ensure that they were not loosened.

  5. At the rear of the case, secure the power supply with four screws.

  6. Plug the main power lead into the motherboard. The connectors are keyed to ensure proper connection.

  7. Lift the hard drive carrier, and then route the hard drive signal cable through the clip on the bottom of the carrier. Check the cable connections on the rear of the hard drive to ensure that they have not been loosened.

  8. Inside the rear of the computer case, align the hooks at the corners of the hard drive carrier with the tabs in the case.

  9. Lower the hard drive carrier into place, and then gently press down to ensure it is seated properly.

  10. Replace the case access panel.

  11. Connect the computer's power cord, and then turn on the computer.
